Games Workshop stopped running tournaments at the end of 2007, and as a result the number of events and players dipped in 2008.  Ignoring 2008, the average number of players at an event has remained around 34 players over the period in question.

Including information supplied by Geoff Tewierik, the average number of players at events has remained fairly constant over the life of the Rankings.

Year # Players
2004 average number of players per tournament 34.2
2005 average number of players per tournament 33.7
2006 average number of players per tournament 34.9

Melbourne has had fewer tournaments each year than most other cities, but the tournaments tend to attract more players.  Arcanacon is undoubtedly Australia's largest regular 40K event, and is held on the Australia Day long weekend each year.  Arcanacon is normally a 40K only event.

Cancon is also held on the Australia Day long weekend each year, but covers many gaming systems including 40K, WFB, Flames of War and other systems.  Cancon would undoubtedly be Australia's largest gaming event.

Army Size

Army Size 2008 2009 2010
2000 pts 21% 10% 12%
1750 pts 31% 47% 47%
1500 pts 34% 25% 26%
750 - 1250 14% 18% 15%

Note that the points limits for tournaments was not recorded in the Rankings for 2007.  The data shows that while 2000 pts tournaments were fairly popular in 2008, they were much less so in 2009 and 2010.  These last two years show that the gaming community seems to have found the 1750 pts level to be their preferred format.
