We have Lord of the Rings (2000) by Reiner Knizia.
We bought the game about 12 years ago to play as a family. The appeal was that it was a co-operative game for 2 to 5 players, where we were working together to achieve the goal. At the time our two kids would have been about 11 and 13.
We recently brought out the game again to play with our now adult children and their partners.
The game requires you to manage several things at once. Each player has a hand of cards, which need to be played to advance the group towards it's main objective. Also the players and Sauron are on a light-dark track and events can make the individual players move towards the dark side (and Sauron) or make Sauron move towards the players. Any players ending up in contact with Sauron will die.
The game seems to scale fairly well in terms of number of players, though I suspect it is slightly easier with more players than with less. Each player starts the game with 6 cards, so a five player group will start with more resources (ie 30 cards) than a two player group (ie 12 cards). However some events can cause every player to have to discard a card, which scales to the number of players. Also there a limited number of tokens that you collect on each board, but only enough for a full set for three players. At the end of each board, each player that doesn't have a full set of tokens has to move towards Sauron on the light-dark track.
Our box has a Wizards of the Coast logo, and the rules list the Australian distributor as Hasbro Australia, 570 Blaxland Rd, Eastwood, NSW 2122 ph (02) 9874-0999. The game has been re-released by FFG, https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/lord-of-the-rings-the-board-game/. From looking at the rulebook on that site it is essentially the same game with different art work on the cards and Shield tokens renamed to Gandalf tokens.
