Australian Rifle Company

Australian 9th Division Rifle Company

Mid-war infantry company.  This uses the British Rifle Company rules in the North Africa book.

Platoon Teams Pts
Company HQ 2 x Cmd Rifle teams 35
Rifle Platoon Cmd Rifle/MG, 6 x Rifle/MG, Light Mortar, sticky bombs 205
Rifle Platoon Cmd Rifle/MG, 6 x Rifle/MG, Light Mortar, sticky bombs 205
Rifle Platoon Cmd Rifle/MG, 6 x Rifle/MG, sticky bombs 185
Carrier Platoon 3 x Universal Carriers, each with extra MG 115
6pdr Anti-Tank Platoon 4 x 6 pdr portees, jeep, Cmd Rifle team 210
25 pdr Field Battery 4 x 25 pdrs, 2 x Cmd Rifle teams, staff team, observer rifle team 245
    1200 pts

The above list gives a useful guide for players starting an Australian Rifle Company.  The Company HQ and 3 Rifle Platoons are compulsory choices.  The Universal Carriers, 6 pdrs and 25 pdrs are choices that most Australian players will find useful in a mid-war Rifle Company.  The Universal Carriers, 6 pdrs, 25 pdrs and up to two Rifle Platoons can also be used in an Australian Divisional Cavalry Squadron list.

Platoon Battlefront Models
Company HQ BR741 (8th Army) or BR746 (Aus) or 2 x BSO130 (Aus)
Rifle Platoon BR742 (8th Army) or BR747 (Aus)
Rifle Platoon BR742 (8th Army) or BR747 (Aus)
Rifle Platoon BR742 (8th Army) or BR747 (Aus)
Carrier Platoon BR210
6pdr Anti-Tank Platoon 4 x BR155 and/or 2 x BR510
25 pdr Field Battery 2 x BR574 plus BSO101

For the Cmd teams and the Rifle Platoons you have the choice of either the generic 8th army models or the Australian specific models.  The main difference is that the Australian specific models include men with Australian slouch hats.  Given that in combat situations the troops would normally be wearing helmets anyway, there is no problem with 8th army generic models.

Note that BR741 and BR746 both include 2 x 3" mortar teams.  This is not very useful because the only way to field 3" mortars in an Australian mid-war list is a Mortar Platoon with at least 4 x 3" mortar teams, cmd team and two observer teams.

For the 6 pdr platoon, you have the choice of using the guns either as portees (mounted on the back of a truck) or on the ground.  The BR155 blister (AUD $13.50) contains a single gun, crew and truck.  The BR510 blister (AUD$25) contains two guns, crews and command team.   In v2 of Flames of War I hardly used the portees.  In v3 of Flames of War, the portee is quite a bit more useful.    What I did was buy the 4 portees, but glue the crew to medium bases.  I didn't glue the guns, so can either put them on the bases or the back of the trucks.  Note than you still need a command team and a jeep.

For the 25 pdr battery, you have the option of buying the guns plus artillery group or you could buy the box set BBX09 for a few dollars more and get the wrong uniform for the desert but get the resin bases.   The best option, which appears no longer available, is the Royal Horse Artillery box set.  It had all the parts to build 4 x 18 pdrs, 4 x 25 pdrs, crews and bases for 4 guns, plus command, staff and observer teams.

DAK Schutzenkompanie

German Afrika Korps Infantry Company

Mid-war infantry company. Uses the Schutzenkompanie rules in the North Africa book.  This is not a list optimised for general opponents but is designed to be a reasonably historical list based around El Alamein era.

Platoon Teams Pts
Company HQ 2 x Cmd Panzerknacker SMG teams 55
Afrika Schutzen Platoon Cmd Panzerknacker SMG team, 6 x MG teams, Anti-Tank Rifle team 215
Afrika Schutzen Platoon Cmd Panzerknacker SMG team, 6 x MG teams, 2 x 5cm PaK 38 gun. 275
Panzer Platoon 3 x Panzer III tanks (Panzer III G) 270
Panzer Platoon 3 x Panzer III Special tanks (Panzer III J) 315
Heavy Panzerspäh Platoon 2 x Sd Kfz 231 (8-rad) 85
    1215 pts

The Panzer III G is outclassed by Grant or Sherman tanks, but nearly half of the Panzer IIIs at El Alamein were this model.
