For an opposing army for my Alexander the Great army I considered Later Achaemenid Persian and Classical Indian. Of the two, the Indians appealed to me more. Additionally there is the advantage that you can use Classical Indian as allies for the Alexander the Great list #40.
The Classical Indian list is #79 in the ADLG rulebook.
I have gone back to using Forged in Battle (War and Empire) figures. I purchased the initial set of figures in November 2020 to provide enough for an allied contingent.
Classical Indian Generals: Elephant, 4-Horse Chariot, 3 mounted (WE-G16)
2x Indian Elephants (WE-NC01)
12x Indian Medium Cavalry (WE-NC04)
24x Indian Archers (WE-NC05)
24x Indian Medium Infantry (WE-NC06)
24x Indian Light Infantry: 16 Javelin, 8 Bow (WE-NC07)
8 x Indian Guardsmen & Clubmen (XY-20088)
When I went to expand on this I was shocked to find that the Forged in Battle figures had gone up from £12 per pack to £15 per pack. I thus went back to Xyston miniatures.
2 x Indian 4-Horse Chariot w/4 Crew (2 x XY-20100)
Indian General's 4-Horse Chariot w/4 Crew (XY-20101)
2 x Indian Elephant with 3 Crew (2 x XY-20102)
Indian Elephant "General" with 3 Crew (XY-20103)
Taking advantage of sales for Christmas 2021, I purchased more Forged in Battle figures to enable me to finish my army.
24x Indian Archers (WE-NC05)
24x Indian Medium Infantry (WE-NC06)
Total spend was about AUD$ 320 to allow me to field about 240 points of models (plus generals)
Deciding the make the the Mauryas variant of the list, I painted two units of Guardsmen (medium swordsmen with 2HW). One of these was Xyston figures that I had purchased back in 2020 but not painted (v4 version of Classical Indian list moved guardsmen to just after Alexander), and the other was using "command" figures with 2 handed swords from the Forged in Battle packs.
